Moon Dog Meadery and Bottle Shop is now open near downtown Durham. The locally owned business creates mead and fruit wines and sells local craft wine and beer. It’s located in the basement at 1104 Broad Street. Pickett Sprouse Commercial Real Estate broker Anna Jenkins represented co-owners Derrick Forrest and Kenneth Thrower in leasing the 3,356 square foot space.

Moon Dog Meadery and Bottle Shop opened on December 26 and is the first business for both Forrest and Thrower.

“We’ve been working other jobs but have both been making mead for a long time and enjoy creating different flavors,” said Thrower. “We’re excited about our new space because its cozy and laid-back environment reflects that spirit of creativity and invites our customers to sit back and leisurely enjoy our products as well as those of other local artisans.”

The business will open in phases, with the bottle shop and limited mead production capabilities currently available. Full production equipment that will expand brewing capacity tenfold will be installed in late spring.

“Knowing the relaxed feel that Derrick and Kenneth wanted their business to have made it easy to recognize that this is the perfect space for them,” said Anna Jenkins. “It’s close to downtown and Ninth Street but in a location that allows them to have plenty of open space and outdoor seating.”

The lease is for a five-year term.
