Orange County, NC is home to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an institution of the University of North Carolina System and the oldest state-supported university in the United States.Chapel Hill boasts a year round population of over 55,000 residents.Hillsborough is the county seat and was founded in 1754, on land where the Great Indian Trading Path crossed the Eno River.The Morehead Planetarium at UNC when it opened in 1949, was one of only a handful of planetariums in the nation, and it has remained an important town landmark for Chapel Hill. During the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs, astronauts were trained there.
