About the Community
The earliest history of the Carolinas marks the rich and fertile land and rolling river that is Alamance County. The Sissipahau Native American settlers called the Hau River, known as the Haw River, home due to the area’s abundant wildlife and rich crop soil. According to a 2010 census, over 150,000 people call Alamance County home. This area has been traditionally associated with textile manufacturing and agriculture. Today this area serves predominantly as a bedroom community for easy access to Durham County and Orange County with lower living expenses. The county is poised for growth as the neighboring counties continue to grow and push further out. The recently thriving town of Mebane is a testament to this fact with its growing family infrastructure and recent addition of Tanger Outlets shopping center. Alamance County also includes Elon University, a private and highly prestigious educational hub located near Burlington NC.
